Catholic social doctrine has always supported that equitable distribution of goods is a priority. Naturally, profit is legitimate and, in just measure, necessary for economic development.

In his Encyclical Centesimus Annus, John Paul II wrote: “The modern business economy has positive aspects. Its basis is human freedom exercised in many other fields” (n. 32). Yet, he adds that capitalism must not be considered as the only valid model of economic organization (cf. ibid., n. 35).

Starvation and ecological emergencies stand to denounce, with increasing evidence, that the logic of profit, if it prevails, increases the disproportion between rich and poor and leads to a ruinous exploitation of the planet.

Instead, when the logic of sharing and solidarity prevails, it is possible to correct the course and direct it towards an equitable, sustainable development.

Pope Benedict XVI’s Homily for Christmas Eve Mass

The pope denounced in his sermon the growing persecution of Christians around the world, particularly in the Middle East (see also HERE).

1.11.2010, Vatican (Catholica) – Astăzi la amiază a avut prezentarea exortaţiei apostolice post-sinodale “Verbum Domini” a Papei Benedict al XVI-lea, despre Cuvântul lui Dumnezeu în viaţa şi misiunea Bisericii. Conferinţa de presă a fost susţinută de Cardinalul Marc Ouellet P.S.S., prefect al Congregaţiei pentru Episcopi; Arhiepiscopul Gianfranco Ravasi, preşedintele Consiliului Pontifical pentru Cutură; Arhiepiscopul Nikola Eterovic şi Mons. It was announced this morning [16 March 2010] by the Holy See that Pope Benedict XVI will beatify John Henry Newman on 19th September 2010, during his visit to the U.K., in the Archdiocese of Birmingham. The Cause of Newman’s Canonisation has released the following statement:

The Fathers and many friends of the English Oratories are delighted by the official announcement that our Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI will beatify our founder, the Venerable John Henry Newman, in the Archdiocese of Birmingham during his visit to Britain in September. Newman made his home in the Archdiocese for all his adult life, first in Oxford, where he lived as an Anglican and was received into the Catholic Church, and later in Birmingham itself where he founded and worked in the Birmingham Oratory for over forty years.

The greatest persecution of the church doesn’t come from enemies on the outside, but is born in sin within the church. The church thus has a deep need to re-learn penance, to accept purification, to learn on one hand forgiveness but also the necessity of justice. Forgiveness does not exclude justice. We have to re-learn the essentials: conversion, prayer, penance, and the theological virtues. That’s how we respond, and we can be realistic in expecting that evil will always launch attacks from within and from outside, but the forces of good are also always present, and finally the Lord is stronger than evil. Archbishop of Canterbury’s address at a Willebrands Symposium in Rome

Rowan Williams, the Anglican Archbishop of Canterbury is in Rome, for meetings at the Vatican, including an audience with Pope Benedict XVI (see some details HERE).

The Archbishop also contributed to the Willebrands Symposium, an academic event celebrating the ecumenical contribution of Cardinal Willebrands, the first President of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity, organised after the Second Vatican Council.

Creşterea în relaţiile ecumenice conţine mari promisiuni pentru proclamarea Evangheliei în timpul nostru, a afirmat Papa Benedict al XVI-lea în ziua de luni, 24 noiembrie 2008, când a prezidat o celebrare ecumenică cu Aram I, Catolicosul Ciliciei Armenilor. Aram I se află în Roma într-o vizită care va include un pelerinaj la Bazilica San Paolo fuori le mura. “Întâlnirea noastră de astăzi”, a spus Papa, “este în continuitate cu vizita pe care i-aţi făcut-o iubitului meu predecesor Papa Ioan Paul al II-lea în ianuarie 1997, şi cu numeroasele contacte şi vizite reciproce care, din harul lui Dumnezeu, au condus în anii recenţi la relaţii mai apropiate între Biserica Catolică şi Biserica Armeană Apostolică”.

Miercuri, 19 noiembrie 2008, în cadrul unei noi audienţe generale dedicate reflecţiei asupra Sf. Pavel , Papa Benedict al XVI-lea a afirmat că doctrina despre justificare a lui Martin Luther este corectă dacă credinţa “nu se opune carităţii”. În această săptămână, Sfântul Părinte a analizat învăţătura Apostolului despre justificare. El a arătat că experienţa convertirii lui Pavel pe drumul Damascului “i-a schimbat radical viaţa: a început să îşi privească toate meritele, realizările unei cariere religioase oneste, ca `pierderi` în faţa sublimităţii cunoaşterii lui Isus Cristos”.
