Rick Warren at Humanum 2014, at the Vatican

Rev Rick Warren was one of the non-Catholic leaders invited by Pope Francis to address the Humanum 2014 gathering at the Vatican, following the Catholic Synod on the family, last month. Here is the recording of his address.

HERE you can find out more about this gathering.

Malkhaz Songulashvili – Tales of Canterbury – 4 – Meeting in the Crypt

Crypt-Canterbury Cathedral
Crypt of Canterbury Cathedral, England

When I saw the purple ticket from Canterbury I read it twice very carefully, thinking of the blue ticket which I had received in Rome. The purple ticket permitted the ticket-holder to enter the precincts of the cathedral and the crypt for robing. Those who were robing and participating in the procession, the purple ticket holders, were asked to be at the crypt one hour and a half before the service started at 2 pm. Before I even entered the crypt in the precincts of the cathedral I bumped into Prince Ghazi of Jordan whom I had met at my college at Oxford a few months earlier at an interfaith conference on love in Muslim, Christian and Jewish traditions. Prof. Paul Fiddes, my doctoral tutor, was the main convener of the conference. Prince Ghazi spoke about love in the Muslim tradition.

“Are you not cold?” asked the prince staring at my bare feet and sandals.

“No, I am used to it.” I gave the standard answer as we made our way to the crypt. Continue reading “Malkhaz Songulashvili – Tales of Canterbury – 4 – Meeting in the Crypt”

Rick Warren on Muslims, Evangelism, and Missions

Rick Warren on Muslims, Evangelism, and Missions.

There is, again, a lot of hysteria around Rick Warren and his engagement with Muslims.

This time the reason is an article in The Orange County Register, which misquotes Warren.

In the interview that you may read at the link above, Rick responds to a series of ridiculous charges raised against him by people who did not bother to check their facts.

It seems that this fanatic fundamentalist madness can be found not only in Romania, but also across the Atlantic.

David Neff reviews a biography of Rick Warren

Like many teenagers, the adolescent Rick Warren wanted to be a rock star. Living in Mendocino County, California, in the sixties, he actually met some, working as a volunteer stagehand for the Golliwogs, a precursor to Creedence Clearwater Revival, and Big Brother and the Holding Company, whose lead singer was Janis Joplin. According to Jeffery L. Sheler‘s Prophet of Purpose: The Life of Rick Warren (Doubleday Religion), the future megachurch pastor and best-selling author looked the part: “tall and thin with long blond Beatle bangs swept across his forehead.” Continue reading “David Neff reviews a biography of Rick Warren”

The Great Evangelical Rebranding

Sarah Posner, The Guardian

In the early part of the noughties, Rev Jerry Falwell declared on national television that the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the US were the result of “throwing God out of the public square, out of the schools. The abortionists have got to bear some burden for this because God will not be mocked.”

“We have sinned against Almighty God, at the highest level of our government, we’ve stuck our finger in your eye,” agreed Pat Robertson, who was hosting Falwell on his 700 Club programme. Continue reading “The Great Evangelical Rebranding”
