Here is an excellent review of Miroslav Volf’s book Allah. A Christian Response, by Pentecostal theologian Amos Young.
Paris is where a long trail of blood and tears, meandering through the centuries and from continent to continent, has now stopped — for a brief while.
The Islamic State has taken the responsibility for the 129 dead and more than 350 injured, almost 100 of them seriously. In Paris as in many other places, the hands that pulled the triggers of Kalashnikov rifles and pulled the fuses of bombs to kill the innocent people belonged to men and women in whose hearts burned the fires of religious zeal.
Religion, it would seem, breeds violence. Far from being great, God might be thought terrible.
In a globalized world, the terror of God’s crazy-eyed followers is threatening lives, peace and prosperity of everyone on the planet. We are tempted to conclude: The sooner that humanity either eradicates or quarantines off religion, the better our world will be. This conclusion would be too hasty, however. One day after the first Yale Center for Faith & Culture Theology of Joy consultation in Tübingen (funded by the John Templeton Foundation), Miroslav Volf engages his Doktorvater, Jürgen Moltmann, on some of the most fundamental questions of Moltmann’s work. Where does joy come from? Whence hope? Who is God?
Thanks to Manu Rusu for the idea.

This is a MUST READ interview with Yale theologian Miroslav Volf on religious violence in our world today.

How Followers of Jesus Should Serve the Common Good.
ABC Interview with Miroslav Volf
Miroslav Volf is Henry B. Wright Professor of Systematic Theology at Yale University, and Founding Director, Yale Center for Faith & Culture.
Last week I had the privilege of participating in Osijek, Croatia, in a ceremony organised by the Evangelical Theological Faculty (ETF), in which Professor Miroslav Volf, from Yale University, received the title of Doctor honoris causa. ETF is Volf’s alma mater and the place where he began his career as a professor of theology. Miroslav Volf is probably the most prominent Protestant theologian born in Eastern Europe.
Continue reading “Christopher Hitchens – intre dispret si gratitudine”

Forgiveness: A Brief on its Assumptions | Jesus Creed.
Scot McKnight has just published on his blog a short post (see the link above) that brings to our attention an elaborated article published by Wilfred M. McClay in First Things on ‘The Moral Economy of Guilt‘.
In spite of the uninspiring style of the author, the article is worth reading and it has stirred up already some interesting discussions on the site of the journal and on McKnight’s blog.
Here is also the comment that I have left there: Continue reading “Forgiveness: A Brief on its Assumptions | Jesus Creed”

A few years ago, a Southern Baptist leader said he could not pray with Jews because they worshiped a different God. The response of most Christians was one of disbelief: Who was Jesus worshiping if not the God of the Jews?
The question becomes thornier in relation to Muslims, who are adamant that God is one, while Christians are adamant that God is one in three—to note just one remarkable difference between the two faiths. But are these differences as stark as they seem at first blush? Some theologians think they are even starker, and have argued such in Christianity Today’s pages.
