CS Lewis – On ‘Sexual’ Morality

Essay also known as “We Have No Unlimited ‘Right to Happiness'”. This title was shortened further, somewhat inaccurately, by the Evening Post. A live animation of a C.S. Lewis essay in the artistic style of my desk lamp. Is that wrong? Written to a secular audience in 1963. I

CS Lewis – The Poison of Subjectivism

This essay contains the essence of Lewis’ arguments in his fascinating short book ‘The Abolition of Man/Humanity’. http://www.amazon.com/Abolition-Man-C…

‘The Abolition of Man’, a series of three lectures that were published, has been rated as one of top ten non-fiction books of the 20th century, and is a booklet really. (It’s only three chapters long or two hour’s read).

Ioan T Morar, Sarbatoarea corturilor – Primele impresii

ioan-t-morar

Acum vreo saptamina, dupa ce am terminat lectura romanului Sarbatoarea corturilor, i-am transmis autorului urmatoarele prime impresii, pe care vi le impartasesc acum si dvs.

* * *

Dragul meu prieten,

Read More Read More

CS Lewis – The Humanitarian Theory of Punishment

(Thanks to Daniela Lunga for the link)

Observation: It is interesting to see reflections of the Girardian scapegoat theory, even if probably Lewis was not aware of it.

Mercy, detached from justice, grows unmerciful. An illustration explaining a theory of Crime and Punishment that C.S Lewis described as ‘a man-eating weed’. Notes below in video description. Continue reading “CS Lewis – The Humanitarian Theory of Punishment”

Mulți, dar proști

Alexandru Racu's avatarCalea de mijloc

Bun, am auzit care sunt obiecţiile:

1. Sunteţi răi, nu-i lăsaţi pe bieţii oameni să-şi oficializeze amorul.

Good News – Franklin Graham’s Moscow Summit Cancelled

Franklin Graham & Hilarion Alfeyev
Franklin Graham & Hylarion Alfeyev

M o s c o w — It was unofficially announced in Moscow on 19 May that the “World Summit in Defence of Persecuted Christians”, planned by the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association in conjunction with the Russian Orthodox Church and the Russian government, has been cancelled or at least postponed. The summit intended to gather 1.000 Christian leaders from as many as 150 countries in Moscow from 28 to 30 October 2016.

Vitaly Vlasenko, Director of External Relations for the Russian Union of Evangelical Christians-Baptists, attributes the decision to the preponderance of other issues burdening the ROA. According to him, Patriarch Kirill’s decision to meet with Pope Francis in Havana on 12 Feb. has caused major discord within the ROC. Consequently, Russian Orthodoxy needs all the resources it can muster to prepare for the global “Holy and Great Synod” scheduled for the Greek-held portion of Crete from 16 to 27 June. This gathering of the heads of all autocephalous (independent) Orthodox churches has been in preparation since 1961 and is touted to be the most significant gathering of Byzantine churches since the Second Council of Nicaea in 787!

John Webster, One of the Greatest Contemporary Theologians Went to Glory

john-webster-1955-2016

An academic friend greeted the news of John Webster’s death with a blog post beginning “I’ll have to get out of the habit of referring to Webster as one of the greatest living theologians.” Within academic theology, few would question that assessment; beyond the universities and colleges, few have ever heard of him.

In part, this is down to John’s genuine humility. He was made a canon of Christchurch Cathedral, Oxford, and served on various Church of England committees when asked, but he never went looking for ecclesial honours. Indeed, he never went looking for academic honours either, although they came regularly.

More, however, John’s vocation was academic. He was committed to hard intellectual work, and he made no apology for it. His writing style was uncompromising, and far from accessible even to some specialists. The last time I heard him give a presentation, a few weeks back, one of my PhD students passed me a note asking if I could explain what the title meant! (It was in Latin, and John did not bother to translate it.)

Why should any reader of Christian Today be interested in his life, then? Continue reading “John Webster, One of the Greatest Contemporary Theologians Went to Glory”

During the current annual Assembly of the Church of Scotland (Presbyterian), delegates, which included my son, Rev. Daniel Manastireanu, the first ethnically Romanian minister in the CoS, has approved the Columba Declaration, ‘that recognises their longstanding ecumenical partnership and lays the groundwork for future joint projects’ (see HERE). Of the about 850 commissioners to the assembly, 50 voted against this motion and 49 abstained (see HERE). A similar motion was approved by the C of E’s General Synod in February.

Kenneth E Bailey

May God rest him in peace with the saints!

Dear Friends:

It is my solemn duty to report to you that our brother and teacher, Dr. Kenneth Bailey, retired member of the presbytery, died last evening (May 23, 2016) in Grove City, surrounded by his immediate family and some close friends.  There will be so much more to say in the coming days, in so many gatherings in our common life, about Ken’s legacy in our ministries.  For now, let us hold in prayer wife Mickey, daughter Sarah, son-in-law Victor, and his extended family … even as we hold on to and hold up the good hope of the resurrection.

Details about arrangements to come later this week.

Sincerely,

Rev. Dr. Ralph William Hawkins

Michelle van Loon on the ‘Commercial Liturgies’ of Mega (or Micro)Churches

rock concert church service

The ‘made in America’ sickening disease of rock-concert-type church services and commercialised ‘liturgies’ spread like wild fire all over the world, including Romania. I would like to believe that most of the time this is done in good (be it misguided) faith, though I am not so sure.

Michelle Van Loon, from Northern Seminary, wrote an excellent reflection about this on the Patheos web platform. Here it is, for your consideration. Continue reading “Michelle van Loon on the ‘Commercial Liturgies’ of Mega (or Micro)Churches”
