Kevin Giles again about the Trinitarian ‘heresies’ of Wayne Grudem and the rest of his fundamentalist bunch. This time of ‘the doctrine of the eternal generation of the Son’.

The paper below was given by Kevin Giles at the plenary forum on the Trinity at the Evangelical Theological Society annual conference, 15th November, 2016 at San Antonia. The other speakers were Dr Bruce Ware, Dr Millard Erickson and Dr Wayne Grudem; Dr Sam Storms presided.

Thank you, Dr Storms, for your welcome. It is a huge honor to be invited to give the introductory address at this ETS plenary forum on the Trinity.
In putting my case this afternoon I am going to speak very forthrightly and unambiguously, as from past experience I am sure Dr Grudem and Dr Ware will do.[1] Dr Erickson who stands with me in opposing Dr Grudem and Dr Ware’s teaching on the Trinity I am sure will be the clearest in what he says and the most gracious. I speak bluntly because the issues we are discussing are of monumental importance for the evangelical community. I believe what Dr Grudem and Dr Ware teach on the Trinity, and now very large numbers of evangelicals believe, contradicts what the Nicene creed, the Reformation and post-Reformation Protestant confessions and the ETS doctrinal statement teach.
To begin my presentation, I make three matters perfectly clear. First, I have no distinctive doctrine of the Trinity. My exposition of the Trinity which follows is simply an outline of what I consider to be the historic, orthodox doctrine of the Trinity as spelt out in the Nicene Creed. I know absolutely nothing about a so-called “evangelical egalitarian doctrine of the Trinity”
What this means is that I have basically the same understanding of the Trinity as the many complementarian confessional Reformed theologians who have “come out” in opposition to Dr Grudem and Dr Ware’s teaching on the Trinity.[2] What this immediately reveals is that the divide on the Trinity is not between evangelical egalitarians and complementarians but between creedal and confessional evangelicals and non-creedal and confessional evangelicals. In aceasta interesanta postare, Eugen Matei discuta pe scurt citeva dintre problemele uneia dintre teologiile sistematice promovate la noi de Paul Negrut, la Universitatea Emanuel, care a si publicat traducerea cartii (probabil platita de autor, cum se fac uneori lucrurile la noi in acest domeniu). In mod straniu, in perioada in care predam la aceasta scoala, Negrut recomanda cu caldura drept manual cartea Christian Theology a lui Alister McGrath, un text excelent, de origine europeana, mult mai potrivit pentru contextul romanesc. Acesta este net superior cartii Christian Theology a lui Millard Erickson, folosit pina atunci la Oradea, la sugestia lui Iosif Ton, care a si publicat-o la editura lui, un text contabilicesc si scolastic, specific dominantei rationaliste asupra peisajului teologic evanghelic in America.
Textul lui Grudem este, in opinia mea, unul dintre cele mai reductioniste si mai primitive texte de teologie sistematica produse de evanghelici.
Poate ca cea mai importanta critica ce ar putea fi adusa acestui text din perspectiva rasariteana este lipsa totala a interactiunii cu teologia ortodoxa si, poate tocmai din aceasta pricina, prezentarea absolut penibila a teologiei Sfintei Treimi.
Ieri am încheiat cursul de teologie sistematică, de vară. De obicei, la încheierea cursului las un timp în clasă în care „anything goes.” Ei, nu chiar orice, ci orice legat de curs. Cumva am ajuns la discutarea metodei în teologie, ocazie cu care am explicat din nou ce am încercat în ultimă instanță să fac în timpul cursului și cum abordarea mea asupra subiectului este diferită față de alte teologii. În acest context am dat două exemple de metodă în teologie care se situează la poli opuși și pe care eu nu le folosesc. Apoi am elaborat puțin asupra metodei folosite în cursul nostru.
Exemplele date în clasă nu le-am ales la întâmplare ci au provenit din discuția din clasă. În celebrarea faptului că am încheiat cursul m-am gândit să pun cele trei metode pe blog, pe scurt, mai ales că mi-am dat seama că un exemplu folosit este o sistematică…

Wayne Grudem is one of the favourite authors of those evangelicals inclined towards fundamentalism. His extremely simplistic Systematic Theology (see for instance his absolutely pathetic treatment of the doctrine of the Trinity|) has been translated into many languages, including Romanian, creating confusion in the minds of many candidates o ecclesial ministry.
Among other subjects, it seems that Grudem has acquired a real obsession with evangelicals sympathetic to the egalitarian position on gender roles (or what he calls ‘evangelical feminism’). He has published already three books on this topic (see HERE, HERE and HERE).
Recently, David C Cramer, from the Council for Biblical Equality, in his article ‘Assessing Hierarchist Logic: Is Egalitarianism Really on a Slippery Slope?‘ has taken Grudem to charge on his claims that what he calls ‘evangelical feminism’ is leading people on the slippery slope towards liberalism, showing the logical fallacies on which Grudem builds his argument. Eu, dimpotriva, am facut o pasiune pentru dogmatica, mai ales pentru triadologie, si sunt destul de putin incintat de felul in care se face teologie biblioca in modernitate, mai ales cind aceasta se reduce la speculatii gramaticale ieftine. Desigur, NT Wright sau Walter Brueggemann sunt alta mincare de peste.Dar sa revenim la subiect.
Poate ca cea mai buna introducere in subiect ar fi articolul despre Trinitate/Sfinta Treim, dintr-un dictionar teologic decent.
De acord cu faptul ca partea de triadologie dintr-o teologie dogmatica ar putea fi o buna introducere. Ar putea, dar nu neaparat, mai ales daca, asa cum se intimpla in cele mai multe teologii sistematice protestante, triadologia este un subiect absolut izolat, intr-o gramada de alte doctrine separate, iar nu fundamenrul edificiului dogmatic, asa cum se intimpla in teologia ortodoxa de calitate sau la Barth si cei care l-au urmat..
Nu recomend Erickson. Este prea scolastic si uscat. Cu atit mai putin Grudem, care este de o superficialitate (tipic evanghelica) absolut strigatoare la cer. In ce priveste triadologia, este absolut habarnamist.
Mai degraba as recomanda dogmatica lui Alister McGrath, mult mai holista si mai nuantata, apropiata modului european de a face teologie.
Pentru o intelegere mai profunda insa, este nevoie de examinarea unei monografii pe aceasta tema.
Pentruca probabil persoana care intreaba este penticostala, ii recomand lucrarea lui Veli-Matti Karkkainen The Trinity: Global Perspectives. Karkkainen, care preda dogmatica la Fuller, are o capacitate rara de a oferi sinteze de foarte buna calitate.
Monografia mea preferata pe aeasta tema este lucrarea lui John Thompson, Modern Trinitarian Perspectives, un text extrem de nuantat, care contine analize subtile si evaluari echilibrate.
Cred ca am scris deja prea mult pentru o introducere in subiect (Intentionez sa public acest text si pe blogul meu) si sunt curios care sunt textele preferate ale altora ssi, mai les, de ce.
Sper ca acestea sa fie de folos ca un inceput de raspuns.
O cititoare a blogului îmi scrie cu următorul mesaj:
Ati putea sa-mi recomandati carti pentru a-mi clarifica conceptul de Trinitate? Intrucat stiu ca este un subiect foarte controversat, inteleg ca trebuie sa am grija ce aleg sa citesc pe aceasta tema si cred ca dumneavoastra stiti care autori sunt de incredere si care nu.
Drept să zic, nu știu ce să recomand. Să o îndrum pe cititoare către capitolele relevante dintr-o teologie dogmatică / sistematică? Pe vremea mea se purta Millard Erickson. Mai nou se poartă Wayne Grudem.
Sigur, ar putea fi citit, pentru echilibrarea perspectivei, un Stăniloae.
Dacă ați fost pasionați de subiectul „trinitate” și puteți recomanda ceva cu temei, aștept comentarii.
Eu nu am făcut niciodată o pasiune pentru dogmatică, fiindcă sunt fire analitică. Mă descurc mai bine să despic firul în patru decât să sintetizez.
Deci, cine știe, să recomande!

Wayne Grudem, Research Professor of Theology and Biblical Studies at Phoenix Seminary, is one of the latest theologians that got involved in abusing the Bible for the cause of neoconservative politics in America.
I confess I was never impressed with Grudem as a theologian. Some people just don’t have the gift and academic degree cannot compensate on that. His Systematic Theology, published in Romanian by Emmanuel University in Oradea (probably because it was paid for), is simplistic, disappointing and pathetic in its lack of understanding of Eastern theology. Besides, it’s treatment of Trinitarianism, a test case of anyone’s theology is just ridiculous.
