Dr Danut Jemna – Viitorul comunitatii penticostale din România

Pentecostal baptism

Textul de fata reia o analiza facuta de Dr. Jemna, singurul specialist in patristica in spatiul pentecostal romanesc, in urma cu aproximativ zece ani.

Ramin indatorat.

The Relevance of God’s Word in a Postmodern Society – Press Release

Fr Tofana & D. Druhora
Fr. Stelian Tofana and Rev. Ovidiu Druhora
at the first ever conference of the Society For
Interdenominational Dialogue (SID)

ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA – On August 29, 2015, Christians from at least three denominations met at what used to be a Jewish temple, Temple Beth Emet, now home to Emanuel Romanian Church of God, marking the first ever conference of the Society For Interdenominational Dialogue (SID).

The event, held under the banner “The Relevance of God’s Word in a Postmodern Society,” was also co-organized by Ekklesia Bible College, a practice-based theological seminary founded by several Romanian pastors from the U.S. that now has branches in Romania, Uganda, and Rwanda. An Orthodox Introduction to the 2nd Edition of the Romanian Translation of ‘Three Views on Eastern Orthodoxy and Evangelicalism’ – 4

  1. ORTHODOXY AND EVANGELICALISM. THREE PERSPECTIVES – A WAY TOWARDS DIALOGUE

This book has been written by people who have had genuinely “stirring” experiences in the two traditions (conversion, abandoning one’s tradition, education in a theological environment, involvement in leading services in a church completely different from the one in which one received one’s theological formation, etc.). This is what makes their way of dealing with the issues discussed so unique. Each position is well argued from a theological point of view. As James J. Stamoolis rightly says, “If you are in search of theological arguments to support each of the positions, you will not be disappointed”.

Evangelicals need to know, however, that the journey towards Orthodoxy with the aim of entering into dialogue with it is no easy one. The danger of becoming bogged down in a precipitate judgement and consequently giving up the journey dogs every step. But the Orthodox too need to know that the same danger lies in wait for them also as they move towards becoming acquainted with the other tradition, the Evangelical one. In fact, the differences between the two ecclesial communities are essentially founded on different interpretations of theological paradigms.

The present volume helps, in a way, towards an understanding of these differences of paradigm, on the one hand, while on the other it facilitates the passage over these ‘chasms’ that are created particularly by differences of language. The interaction between the authors in the way they express their positions is strongly personalised by each of them, with the result that there is of course no danger of monotony in either the argumentation or the experience of reading. 1. WHAT HAS HAPPENED IN CONCRETE TERMS IN ROMANIA IN REGARD TO DIALOGUE?

In terms of events that have given concrete expression to the concern for dialogue between Orthodox and Evangelicals in Romania, a number of initiatives may be mentioned.

In 2009, the Babes-Bolyai University, through the Centre for Lifelong Learning, the Faculty of Orthodox Theology, the Centre for Biblical Studies, World Vision International and the Iasi-based Adoramus publishing house, held a conference at Cluj-Napoca with the title The Paschal Mystery and the Liturgical Life of the Church, at which Dr Bradley Nassif, professor of Biblical and Theological Studies at North Park University, Chicago, was an invited speaker.

The conference was followed by the launching of the Romanian translation of the book Orthodoxy and Evangelicalism. Three Perspectives. Those who spoke on this occasion were Professor Nassif, Dr Danut Manastireanu and the Revd Professor Stelian Tofana. All three speakers stressed, in their addresses, the book’s significance for non-official theological dialogue between Orthodox and Evangelicals in Romania.

Following these two events, and on the same day, there was also a round-table discussion on the subject “Orthodoxy and Evangelicalism. Perspectives in Dialogue”, which took place at the university staff club. Those who attended this discussion were priests and teachers from the Cluj-Napoca Faculty of Orthodox Theology and a number of Evangelical pastors and believers from Cluj and from other Romanian cities. 1. WHAT DO WE HAVE TO LEARN FROM ONE ANOTHER?

Of course, we often ask ourselves, not without some degree of self-assurance (as we must acknowledge), whether we have anything to learn from one another, Orthodox from Evangelicals and Evangelicals from Orthodox. If we are honest with ourselves, there can only be one answer: Yes! We have many things to learn from one another! But among these benefits I would like to highlight just a few, which, I judge, would be useful to us along the ‘path of dialogue’ if we do indeed wish to walk it together.

  1. Orthodox have to learn from Evangelicals:
  • How much work they still have to do to make the Gospel of Christ much clearer and much more central in the lives of Orthodox Christians than it has been up to now[1]. The Orthodox Church needs to overcome a huge disadvantage, namely the so-called phenomenon of ‘biblical illiteracy’, and Evangelicals are, here, an example for what needs to be done for us to escape from this impasse. This example is not one to be ignored. A year ago I initiated, at the Transfiguration Orthodox Church in Cluj, a biblical programme with the title “Let’s read and learn the Bible together!” Many attend. Half the time is devoted to interaction with those present. But I was very surprised to discover two things:

ortodoxie_si_evanghelism

In the spring of 1995 I was coordinating the academic research programme at what has now become the Emanuel University of Oradea. At the first scholarly colloquium which I organised in this role I had the providential opportunity to come to know the Revd Professor Stelian Tofana, of the Faculty of Orthodox Theology in Cluj, and since then we have maintained an especially close bond. This accounts for our decision to share the writing of a Romanian preface to the second edition of this work: Orthodoxy and Evangelicalism. We are united both by a common interest in Eastern theology and spirituality, which each of us approaches from his own perspective, and by our firmly held personal conviction of the pressing need for theological and ecclesial dialogue between the different Christian traditions in our cultural context.

Over the years we have been involved together in many activities which have put flesh on the bones of these shared convictions. We have participated in academic conferences both within Romania (in Oradea, Cluj, Bucharest and elsewhere) and abroad (including Bossey, in Switzerland, and Durres in Albania) that have been organised both by Evangelicals and by the Orthodox; we have contributed to the resulting publications of their proceedings; we have joined in organising the promotion of books relevant to this dialogue; we have collaborated in spiritually-oriented training sessions for the staff of World Vision (an organisation I have been working for since December 1999); we have each sought to make more widely known within our own constituency the treasures of thought and spirituality to be found in the tradition of the other – and, last but not least, we have often enjoyed table fellowship in one another’s homes, which has provided occasions to celebrate what unites us in spite of the specific differences which define each of our ecclesial identities. Two John Stott Stories

During the summer of 2001, while I was doing my PhD studies at London School of Theology, with support from Langham Scholarship, uncle John agreed to support an unusual project: providing funding for an Eastern Orthodox Biblical scholar from Romania for spending a number of weeks in doing research at the Tyndale House in Cambridge. Building Bridges – A New Book of the Orthodox-Evangelical Dialogue

A number of Romanian theologians were involved during the last decade in an Orthodox-Evangelical dialogue hosted by the Ecumenical Institute in Bossy, Switzerland, led by Fr. Ioan Sauca.

Among these were the Orthodox Vasile Mihoc and Stelian Tofana and the Evangelicals Emil Bartos and Otniel Bunaciu, among others.

A new book, whose cover you see above, brings together the main papers presented during this series of theological encounters.  Here is a short presentation: Continue reading “Building Bridges – A New Book of the Orthodox-Evangelical Dialogue”
