An Austrian pastor in the Church of Sweden has given up his license to preach after being exposed as a former spy for a once-feared Communist intelligence agency.

Aleksander Radler admitted that he was recruited to East Germany’s Ministry of State Security, popularly known as Stasi, after studying theology in the Communist nation. When Radler moved to Sweden in 1968, he continued his work as a Stasi agent for 24 years, denouncing students planning to escape from East Germany among other tasks.

The Church of Sweden also found records that the 68-year-old pastor was an “elite spy,” the highest ranking such informants working abroad could receive.

After giving up his preaching license, Radler wrote a responseto Swedish newspaper Dagen. “Through information that I passed on about students in what was then the DDR, these people were incarcerated and treated badly at the end of the 1960s,” he wrote. “Nothing torments my conscience as much as that.”

Radler went on to admit that “on the one hand there was my work for God, and then the dark memories, irreconcilable with the Christian message, on the other.”

CT has examined whether past collaboration with Communist persecutors should bar pastors from ministerial positions, noting that this continues the debate started by Augustine and the Donatists in the 300s.

În a doua jumătate a lunii octombrie 1989, pastorul Gauck a ţinut o predică cu un puternic îndemn la implicare civică, în care, fraternizând cu mişcările anti-comuniste din nordul RDG, a lansat ideea „Noi suntem poporul!”. Spre sfârşitul anului a devenit co-fondator al Noului Forum, mişcare a opoziţiei democratice şi a fost ales purtător de cuvânt al acesteia. A participat, de asemenea, la numeroase manifestaţii anti-comuniste. În alegerile din 18 martie 1990 a fost ales în Camera Poporului din parlamentul Germaniei Democrate şi până la disoluţia statului (octombrie 1990) şi reunificarea Germaniei, a fost reprezentantul Alianţei 90, formată din Noul Forum, Democracy Now şi Iniţiativa pentru Pace şi Drepturi Civile. Cu o zi înaintea dizolvării RDG, pe 2 octombrie 1990, Camera Poporului l-a ales prin vot Reprezentantul Special pentru Arhivele STASI, urmând să se ocupe de gestionarea arhivelor secrete. A doua zi, Cancelarul german, Helmut Kohl şi preşedintele Germaniei, Richard Weizsäcker l-au validat în funcţie. El era însărcinat cu păstrarea Arhivelor STASI şi investigarea crimelor comunismului. Din 1992 şi până în 2000, când a fost înlocuit de Marrianne Birthler, a deţinut funcţia de Însărcinat al Arhivelor STASI.

Georg Herbstritt despre Stasi si Securitate

Centrul de Studii asupra Comunismului şi Postcomunismului din cadrul Universităţii Al. I. Cuza din Iaşi a organizat joi 20 martie o întîlnire cu Dr. Georg Herbstritt, cercetator in cadrul Oficiului pentru Administrarea Arhivelor Stasi din Berlin. Dr. Herbstritt se află la Iaşi pentru a preda în cadrul masteratului Istoria comunismului românesc, din cadrul Universităţii ieşene. Cercetătorul a publicat împreună cu Stejãrel Olaru cartea Stasi şi Securitatea (Editura Humanitas, 2005).
Dr. Herbstritt, care este de profesie istoric, dar a studiat şi teologia, a făcut în prelegerea sa o comparaţie între modul de operare al Stasi (poliţia secretă comunistă din fostul RDG) şi Securitate. El a arătat de asemenea, că asemenea studii comparative, precum şi examinarea documentelor din ambele arhive pot face lumină în multe chestiuni rămase neclare în cercetările de pînă acum cu privire la comunism.
