A Prayer for the Middle East

prayer of a child

Lord, you are the rightful Advocate of peace, teach us to carry the torch of peace and justice that it may reside within the hearts of Palestinians and Israelis, and radiate in our Middle East. Banish the violence and evil within all combatants in Syria, Iraq, Palestine and Israel. Through the grace of Love transform the Middle East into a heaven, where Sunnis, Shiites, Jews and Christians can live together as brothers and sisters, and sons of You Almighty God.

Welcome into your kingdom all children killed in Gaza, and comfort the wounded people from both sides, sustain parents and families who are under siege and fire. Sustain our staff in Gaza that they can provide light and hope in a very desperate environment.

Lord, it is time to end violence and hatred. We cannot go on like this, something should change and we are waiting for your intervention. Change our hearts and transform lives of all people especially children. Strengthen our faith that we continue to witness Your love and mercy among people surrounding us.

Lord we trust in You.

(I have received this from my friend and colleague Dr. Charlie Abou Saada, in Bethlehem, Palestine.)

Dr. Yohanna Katanacho – Cry with Us – A Lament for Gaza

Cry-for-Humanity-Gaza

This is a season of weeping and mourning, but it is not void of hope.

Our tears are the bridge between brutality and humanity;

Our tears are the salty gates for seeing a different reality;

Our tears are facing soulless nations and a parched mentality;

Our tears are the dam preventing rivers of animosity.

Goodness

Let us bow down in humility at the power and grandeur of the Holy Spirit. Let us worship the Holy Trinity and give glory today to the Paraclete, our Advocate.

Oh Holy Spirit, by Your power, Christ was raised from the dead to save us all. By Your grace, miracles are performed in Jesus’ name. By Your love, we are protected from evil. And so, we ask with humility and a beggar’s heart for Goodness within us.

We want to be like your Saints in heaven. Holy Spirit, renew us by your power with your Goodness that we may bring the Good News to the world.

Amen.

Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created. And You shall renew the face of the earth.

O, God, who by the light of the Holy Spirit, did instruct the hearts of the faithful, grant that by the same Holy Spirit we may be truly wise and ever enjoy His consolations, through Christ Our Lord,

Novena to the Holy Spirit – Day 1

Holy Spirit Novena

NOTE: I have not marked in any way on this blog the Feast of the Pentecost. In fact, I have changed only today the ikon on the right column, marking the particular time in the church calendar.

However, I have received today, from my friend Natalia, who gets married in less than two weeks, the invitation to join her and her bridegroom, Joe, in a novena of the Holy Spirit, in preparation for this wedding. I have decided to accompany them in this spiritual pilgrimage, and I invite you to do also do it with us, by posting here the prayers for every day.

This novena is centred on the gifts of the Spirit and is somewhat different from what Natalia shared. I attach below the document shared by my friend.

Come, Holy Spirit!

Lutheran Bishop Munib Younan Requests Prayers for Peace in the Holy Land

Munib Younan
Bishop Munib Younan

As Bishop Munib Younan prepares to attend the prayer service at the Vatican with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli President Shimon Peres, he has asked that our friends and partners around the world pray for peace based on justice for both nations and peoples:

“We Christians have the power of prayer.  Prayer will change us – it will not change the mind of God, which is the mind of peace – but it will change us and change the minds of our leaders.  It will show our leaders that our people in both Palestine and Israel don’t want any more hatred, they don’t want any more violence, they don’t want any more separation, they don’t want any more occupation, they don’t want any more blood shed.  They want to live with their children and grandchildren lives of peace with justice.
I would ask all the Lutherans in the world support us in their prayers during Sunday services that God will change the minds of our leaders and people towards peace.” Continue reading “Lutheran Bishop Munib Younan Requests Prayers for Peace in the Holy Land”

28 March – Day of Prayer for Ukraine

Winter 2014 has become the most tragic period in Ukraine’s history of national development. For more than three months, there has been a very aggressive confrontation between the people of Ukraine and government special police forces. Demonstration lost its peaceful character after people were killed, and the 19th of February was a horrible day, marked by close to 900 injured people and 77 dead due to gunshot wounds. Prayer is much needed for families of those who lost their loved ones. May the Lord protect their hearts, minds, and souls from hatred and aggressive decisions.

Christmas in Bethlehem – A Prayer

Father, the day Jesus was born, the day He arrived on earth as both God and man, is pictured in our minds as a peaceful time of great joy. But in the heavens, a battle was being waged, and that battle continues today.

Thank You that Jesus lived a perfect life, and that he took on the enormity of all our sin that we might love You and serve Your church. Continue reading “Christmas in Bethlehem – A Prayer”

John van de Laar – A Prayer of Confession in Remembrance of Madiba

Gracious and Reconciling God,
Even as we celebrate your grace and love
which has come to us in Christ,
Even as we remember those who, like Madiba,
have revealed your compassion and freedom to us;

We are forced to acknowledge
that we have not always listened, we have not always seen,
and we have all too often failed to act on the call to justice
which you have spoken through them. Continue reading “John van de Laar – A Prayer of Confession in Remembrance of Madiba”

Prayer of Saint Francis de Sales

Lord, I am Yours, and I must belong to no one but You.
My soul is Yours, and must live only by You.
My will is Yours, and must love only for You.
I must love You as my first cause, since I am from You.
I must love You as my end and rest, since I am for You.
I must love You more than my own being, since by being subsists by You.
I must love You more than myself, since I am all Yours and all in You.
Amen.

Saint Francis de Sales lived from 1567 to 1622. He became the Bishop of Geneva and was a reputed preacher. He is well known for his writings of spiritual direction. He is the patron saint of writers, journalists and catholic press. Here is a beautiful prayer from his book “Treatise on the Love of God”.

World Vision – A Call to Prayer for Peace in Syria

On Sept 7, starting 7 pm until midnight at St Peter’s Square (Italy UTC + 01:00), Pope Francis asked each and every religious person and those against war to join him “gather together in prayer, in a spirit of penitence, to ask from God this great gift [of peace] for the beloved Syrian nation and for all the situations of conflict and violence in the world.”
Pope Francis, pontiff of the Roman Catholic church, has called on all people of faith, regardless of religious sect or affiliations, to observe Sept 7 as a global day of prayer and fasting for Syria  condoning the use of chemical weapons as a means to settle any domestic or international conflict.

The deteriorating drama of Syria inspired Francis to set aside Sept. 7 as a day of fasting and prayer for Syria.

Francis invited Catholics, other Christians, those of other faiths and non-believers who are `’men of good will” to join him that evening in St. Peter’s Square to invoke the `’gift” of peace for Syria, the rest of the Middle East and worldwide where there is conflict.

“The world needs to see gestures of peace and hear words of hope and of peace,” Francis said.

He said the prayer vigil in the square will last from 7 p.m. until midnight.

Richard Rohr – A Prayer

Loving God, we love how you love us. We love how you free us. We love what you have given and created to surround us. Help us to recognize, and to rejoice in, what has been given, even in the midst of what is not given. Help us not to doubt all that you have given us, even when we feel our very real shortcomings. We thank you for the promise and sign of your love in the Eternally Risen Christ, pervading all things in the universe, unbound by any of our categories of logic or theology.

We offer you ourselves back in return. We offer you our bodies, our little lives, our racing minds and restless hearts into this one wondrous circle of Love that is You. My life is no longer just about me, but it is all about you.
