Note: This short text, on the perseccution of Christians in general, and the maartyrdom of the Coptic Church in particular comes from one of my favourite Orthodox theologians, the Romanian Fr. Doru Costache, who serves now in Australia. In the context of the present hysteria, especially in the US, on how they, poor good Christians (who brough foolish Trump to power), are persecuted by the secular world, which does not understad how precious they are, I believe the common sense gospel words in this text have to be heard more largely than on the academic website where they were published. Of course, I do this with the kind permission of Fr. Costache, to whom goes my gratitude.

No, you do not have to expect me to say that the current circumstances are new and that these days Christians must take some unprecedented action or to abolish their past. Neither should you expect me to say something like Christianity being in need of a radical reform today more than yesterday. My interest is in pointing out the need to retrieve something that we seem to have lost in history: our capacity to discern the times and assess our circumstances in a genuinely traditional manner. But let me be more specific.

Just recently, on Palm Sunday, our sisters and brothers of the Coptic Orthodox Church in Egypt have been once again the object of hate attacks on the part of their non-Christian neighbours. And the day before more Christians have been put to death in Syria. And the day before that more Christians have been put to death elsewhere. And days before that a Catholic priest was slaughtered during the celebration of the eucharist in France. And I hear of cases of Christians harassed by their non-Christian neighbours in some parts of Sydney. All this because they, indeed we, are Christian.

Christ Is Risen! Rejoice!

My Easter ikon this year comes from Egypt, in commemoration of the Coptic martyrs who died there at the hand of religious fanatics on Palm Sunday. May the Lord bless them and rest them with the saints!

What will we say to them?

THANK YOU

The first thing we will say is “Thank you very, very much,” and you won’t believe us when we say it.

You know why we thank you? I’ll tell you. You won’t get it, but please believe us.

You gave us to die the same death as Christ–and this is the biggest honor we could have. Christ was crucified–and this is our faith. He died and was slaughtered–and this is our faith. You gave us, and you gave them to die.

We thank you because you shortened for us the journey. When someone is headed home to a particular city, he keeps looking at the time. “When will I get home? Are we there yet?” Can you imagine if in an instant he finds himself on a rocket ship straight to his destination? You shortened the journey! Thank you for shortening the journey.

We thank you because you gave to us to fulfill what Christ said to us: “Behold, I send you out as lambs among wolves” (Luke 10:3). We were lambs; our only weapons: our faith and the church we pray in. I carry no weapon in my hand. We are so grateful that you helped us fulfill this saying of Christ.

Pr Ioan-Florin Florescu – Copii pentru țară sau o țară pentru copii?

Pr. Florescu, un om foarte drag sufletului meu, a publicat din nou un text extrem de curajos, aproape profetic, a propos de ideea, cel putin neinspirata, ca sa nu spun mai mult, a Mitropolitului Andrei de la Cluj exprimata recent la Marsul pentru viata. Iata inceputul acestui text scris Pr Florescu pe blogul sau:

Mitropolitul Clujului a numărat zilele trecute de câți copii are nevoie o familie și i-au ieșit trei: „unul pentru tata, unul pentru mama și unul pentru țară și biserică”. Să mă ierte Părintele Mitropolit, dar în țara unde, nu chiar demult, altcineva a numărat până la patru, cu consecințele pe care le știm, poate ar fi bine ca măcar o vreme să nu mai numere nimeni copiii românilor.

        Problema natalității nu se rezolvă prin presiuni asupra părinților. Acestea sunt ineficiente, dar mai ales imorale. Biserica binecuvintează căsătoria și nașterea copiilor, dar e numai dreptul părinților să decidă când și câți copii să facă. Pentru că nimeni nu împarte cu ei nici responsabilitatea aducerii lor pe lume, nici greutățile creșterii lor.

        M-am cam săturat de predici pentru părinți. Aș vrea să aud din partea ierarhilor noștri câteva predici pentru miniștri și pentru parlamentari, adică pentru cei care au datoria să adopte o legislație care să ajute familia și copiii, așa cum se întâmplă în țările din vestul Europei. Oare chiar nu înțelegem că, în România, scăderea natalității are legătură în mod direct cu viața oamenilor de la un salariu la altul și cu nesiguranța zilei de mâine în care trăiesc cele mai multe familii? Așa stau lucrurile, dincolo de predici frumoase și cuvinte mari.

        Ca dovadă, cei mai mulți copii români se nasc de câțiva ani nu în țară, ci în afara țării (cu o treime mai mulți, arată statisticile), adică acolo unde părinții lor au dreptul la o viață decentă și unde guvernele sprijină familiile cu copii.

Intentional Discipleship and Disciple-Making. An Anglican Guide for Christian Life and Formation is a publication of The Anglican Consultative Council, aiming to revive interest in the ancient discipline and practice of disciple-making within the Anglican Communion.

My friend, Rev. Mark Oxbrow, asked me to write about the practice of discipleship within the Orthodox Christian tradition. My initial text had to be shortened, in order to fit a very limited space, in which a variety of topics was discussed.

I attach below my short text. Time allowing, I intend to publish on my blog a more extended discussion of this important topic.

Abstract
Prezenta teză de doctorat își propune să contribuie prin demersul ei științific la optimizarea dialogului interconfesional. Cercetarea se va limita la examinarea literaturii teologice recente, a documentelor și consultațiilor care au avut loc pe continentul nord- american, cu referință la viața spirituală a celor două tradiții creștine, pe o perioadă de timp bine determinată. Această perioadă va acoperi peste o sută de ani, justificată cronologic între 1910 și anul curent.
Demersul cercetării pornește de la premisa că dialogul ecumenic este un deziderat născut din spiritul dragostei creștine și a respectului reciproc, dar care își definește sensul și relevanța în rugăciunea Mântuitorului Cristos cu privire la unitatea creștină și misiunea Bisericii pentru lumea contemporană (Ioan 17:21). Lucrarea se situează la interferența interogației cu răspunsurile posibile la întrebarea: “cum este cu putință ca cele două tradiții să intre într-un dialog autentic, astfel încât să ajungă să recunoască viața și harul lui Cristos în aproapele din cealaltă confesiune?”

A Short Dialogue on Ecumenism

Note: The text below was written in response to questions addressed to me over a year ago, by Rev. Dorin Druhora (now Rev. Dr. Druhora), from Los Angeles, US, while he was doing his doctoral research on Evangelical-Orthodox relations in the USA. In the mean time he has successfully defended his thesis and I will publish soon some details about it.

1. Please define the uniqueness of the ecumenical dialogue here on the North American continent, in contrast with the dialogue in Europe or elsewhere? Do you see a paradigm that is specific to western culture (particularly in US, in the context of a pluralist Christian tradition or in the light of the dialogical development)? If your expertise is focused more on Europe, please address the question based on your experience.

DM – Although I never lived in the US, I traveled extensively there and I follow constantly the religious landscape there. Ecumenism is well and alive in the US. Yet, it involved more the Catholics and the mainline Protestants. Many of the American evangelical leaders do not strike me as very open ecumenically. That is true especially with the neo-reformed movement (the likes of Piper and Mohler), which is the new form of fundamentalism. However, there is a lot to appreciate also.

– În ultimii ani, cititorii dvs. v-au putut cunoaşte o latură neştiută a personalităţii dvs.: aceea de creştin practicant. Cum a început drumul dvs. spre Dumnezeu? Cum aţi descoperit bucuria cre­dinţei?

– Am simţit misterul teribil al lui Dumnezeu, încă înainte să ştiu bine ce-i cu el. Credinţa a crescut în mine natural, cumva firesc, fără să fi existat vreun moment zero, vreo revelaţie sau vreun şoc exis­ten­ţial, cum au fost, de exemplu, cele ale Sfântului Apostol Pavel sau al Fericitului Augustin. Pur şi simplu, în procesul de descoperire de sine, prin care trece orice om în anii primei tinereţi, eu am desco­perit în mine un credincios. Nu am fost niciodată altfel. Lecturile şi un anumit anturaj m-au ajutat enorm să înţeleg ce e cu mine, abia mai târziu. Cât despre mărturisirea credinţei mele – simt nevoia să o fac tot mai des, cu cât văd că lumea de­vine tot mai necredincioasă. În cazul meu, mărtu­risirea credinţei creştine este, mai ales, o apologetică. Pe măsură ce se înteţesc atacurile la adresa creştinis­mului, simt nevoia să vorbesc lumii despre splendoa­rea credinţei mele. Sunt sigur că dacă aş fi trăit într-o lume mai încreştinată şi mai îmbisericită, precum cea medievală, de pildă, nu aş fi vorbit prea mult despre credinţa mea. Precizez că nu împărtăşesc deloc pre­judecata Evului Mediu ca ev întunecat, obscurantist, plin de demoni şi ignoranţă, în mare diferenţă faţă de vremurile noastre, inteligente, luminoase şi deschise. Nici vorbă! Evul Mediu a fost o vreme cu lumini şi umbre precum este şi cea de astăzi. Iar ignoranţa şi prostia colectivă de azi nu este cu nimic mai prejos decât cea din Evul Mediu.

– Aţi avut o educaţie religioasă în familie?

– Mai degrabă, nu. Cum v-am spus, întâi am fost credincios şi abia apoi mi-am dat seama de asta…

Andrei Gaitanaru – Initiafrica pentru familie

Andre Gaitanaru a publicat recent, pe platforma Contributors, un text foarte consistent, legat de initiativa asa-numitei Aliante pentru Familie, privind modificarea Constitutiei in sensul definitiei familiei ca uniunea intre un barbat si o femeie.

Redau mai jos citeva fragmente semnificative din acest text, care incearca sa sugereze necesitatea unei dezbateri reale, pe argumente, in legatura cu aceasta initiativa (sublinierile cu aldine imi apartin).

Proiectul de modificare a modului în care este definită familia în cadrul Constituției, susținut de mai multe Biserici creștine, a fost o greșeală. Nu susțin acest lucru în pofida faptului că sunt ortodox, ci tocmai pentru că sunt unul sau, cel puțin, pentru că încerc să fiu unul. Ceea ce înseamnă că mă străduiesc să cunosc pe cât pot de bine tradiția Sfinților Părinți ai Bisericii și să o interiorizez prin intermediul vieții bisericești. …urmărind chestiunea schimbării modului în care familia este definită în Constituție, am ajuns treptat la concluzia că Inițiativa a pornit de la o îngrijorare legitimă pentru modul în care Creștinismul înțelege lumea, dar a sfârșit prin a acționa pe coclauri străine acestuia.

Pot creștinii să impună la nivelul Constituției o definiție a familiei și a căsătoriei conformă antropologiei creștine? Dacă ne grăbim să spunem că da, ar trebui să ne întrebăm atunci de ce nu mergem ceva mai departe. De ce, de pildă, creștinii ortodocși nu ar cere scoaterea în afara legii a celorlalte culte. În fond, conform Ortodoxiei, la noi este învățătura cea dreaptă. Celelalte confesiuni sunt, ca atare, mai mult sau mai puțin heterodoxe. Iar alte culte sunt de-a dreptul erezii. Câtă vreme avem majoritatea, de ce să nu impunem restrângerea conceptului de „cult” conform învățăturii ortodoxe? Avem o lege a cultelor?! A se slăbi! O modificăm și pe ea. Sau putem să o luăm invers. Ce s-ar întâmpla dacă creștinii ar fi minoritari în România, iar o majoritate atee ar decide să adauge în Constituție faptul că Dumnezeirea este o plăsmuire a minții? Ce ne-ar mai putea proteja în acel context? Singura noastră pavăză ar fi tocmai canonul constituțional care filtrează prin intermediul legilor sale deciziile majorității din cadrul unei democrații.

Statement of Intent

Sixty Orthodox and Evangelical Church leaders, theologians and mission workers gathered in Addis Ababa for a Regional Consultation at the invitation of Ethiopian leaders from both traditions. Over four days, we prayed, discussed, studied and shared meals together and were graciously received during our visit to the Ethiopian Patriarchate. Over half those present came from Ethiopia, with further regional representation from Egypt, Eritrea, India

and Kenya. Many Orthodox participants came from the Oriental family of Churches, and were joined by participants from the Eastern Orthodox family of Churches. Evangelical participants came from the Mekane Yesus Church, the Kale Heywet Church, the Meserete Kristos Church, the Mulu Wongel Church and the Anglican Church of Ethiopia, as well as Anglicans, Baptists, Independent Evangelicals, Methodists and Presbyterians from other parts of the region and the world.

We wish to express our gratitude to the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church and the Evangelical Churches of Ethiopia for hosting our gathering. At the opening session we were encouraged by an inspiring message of greeting from His Holiness Abune Mathias I, Patriarch and Catholicos of Ethiopia, and members of the Steering Committee were warmly received by His Holiness, who encouraged them to continue the work of the Lausanne-Orthodox Initiative (LOI).

In Genesis we see the divine dance in an early enigmatic story (18:1-8). “The Lord” appears to Abraham as “three men.” Abraham and Sarah seem to see the Holy One in the presence of these three, and they bow before them and call them “my lord” (18:2-3 Jerusalem Bible). Their first instinct is one of invitation and hospitality—to create a space of food and drink for their guests. Here we have humanity feeding God; it will take a long time to turn that around in the human imagination. “Surely, we ourselves are not invited to this divine table,” the hosts presume.

This is the first presentation I have done on 16 April, 2016, at the Institute for Orthodox Christian Studies (IOCS), in Cambridge, UK, as part of a series of community lectures titled ‘Contemporary Fathers and Mothers of the Church: Guides for Today’s World’.

I concentrate in this first lecture on the spiritual and ecumenical implications of Fr Dumitru Staniloae’s theology.

Those of us who have great regard for many aspects of the Orthodox Church can this week go back to showing that regard mainly by appreciating and displaying the visual beauties of icons and art work from the Orthodox tradition. We can return to listening to its chants and other sacred music, exploring its devotional practices, and revisiting the history of that part of the Christian Church which, through many centuries, was most exposed to its enemies, whether in the centuries of Ottoman rule or the decades of Soviet Russian strictures. What we can’t do is locate “Stop the press” releases after its Holy and Great Council, which concluded on Sunday, June 26.

Not that “we” were not looking for signs of motion in the Orthodox bloc, or had not been urged and given time to look. While especially metropolitan areas in the West demonstrated evidences of parish vitality and members’ loyalty, Christians and others who were not part of Orthodoxy often found the faithful flocks worshipping and celebrating at some cultural distance from “everybody else.” Not that there was no notice of some recent newsworthy events, beginning with the last-minute move of the Council from Istanbul to the island of Crete. Now and then a news release or a blog spread word of the forthcoming gathering, and a few daring prognosticators foresaw enlivening trends as the various factions in the Church promised to regard others with some favor. But we ended up with little marketable news, or even news of the less-marketable sort noticeable in parishes, seminaries, and the like.

Radu Bordeianu – After Fifty Years of Preparations, Will the Pan-Orthodox Council Be Ecumenically Relevant?

For the next nine days, a Great and Holy Council of the Eastern Orthodox Church will convene, starting today with the arrival of the official delegations at the Orthodox Academy of Crete in Greece. The Council’s main accomplishment, if ongoing disagreements could have been resolved, would have been the convocation of the fourteen autocephalous (independent, nation-based) Orthodox churches. Orthodoxy claims, with respect to ecumenical relations, that one of its charisms (holy gifts) is synodality—the ecumenical participation of the autocephalous churches in the governance of the Church as a whole. The convening of the long-awaited Council and a practical demonstration of ecumenicity will increase the credibility of that claim.

The last ecumenical Council was Nicaea II in 787. The schisms that divided Christianity in the second millennium have made it impossible to arrange for another ecumenical council. As a result, the Orthodox can only convene a pan-Orthodox Council. Many factors have hampered organizing such a Council.

With the fall of the Byzantine Empire and the Ottoman occupation of the Balkans, gathering a Pan-Orthodox Council became practically impossible. After the fall of the Ottoman Empire, Orthodox Churches in Eastern Europe became enthralled with the nationalist ideals that accompanied the formation of independent states, so their commitments ran counter to pan-Orthodoxy.

Good News – Franklin Graham’s Moscow Summit Cancelled

M o s c o w — It was unofficially announced in Moscow on 19 May that the “World Summit in Defence of Persecuted Christians”, planned by the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association in conjunction with the Russian Orthodox Church and the Russian government, has been cancelled or at least postponed. The summit intended to gather 1.000 Christian leaders from as many as 150 countries in Moscow from 28 to 30 October 2016.

Vitaly Vlasenko, Director of External Relations for the Russian Union of Evangelical Christians-Baptists, attributes the decision to the preponderance of other issues burdening the ROA. According to him, Patriarch Kirill’s decision to meet with Pope Francis in Havana on 12 Feb. has caused major discord within the ROC. Consequently, Russian Orthodoxy needs all the resources it can muster to prepare for the global “Holy and Great Synod” scheduled for the Greek-held portion of Crete from 16 to 27 June. This gathering of the heads of all autocephalous (independent) Orthodox churches has been in preparation since 1961 and is touted to be the most significant gathering of Byzantine churches since the Second Council of Nicaea in 787!

Semnalez aici o importanta aparitie editoriala cu caracter ecumenic, mai precis, legata de dialogul ecumenic evanghelic-ortodox (sau ortodox-evanghelic, daca va cade mai bine asa :-)).

Lucrarea, editata de Tim Grass, Paul si Jenny Rolph, precum si de Ioan Sauca, apare in traducerea Diac. lect. univ. dr. Florin Toader Tomoioaga, de la Facultatea de teologie ortodoxa din cadrul Universitatii Oradea. Cartea este publicata de Editura Imago Dei, din Oradea.

Lucrarea aduna laolalta cele mai importante contributii la trei reuniuni de dialog teologi evangheli-ortodox desfasurate in ultimii douazeci de ani la Institutul ecumenic de la Bossey, in Elvetia. La ultima dintre acestea am avut si eu cinstea de a participa, cunoscindu-i acolo in mod personal pe cei mai multi dintre autori, impreuna cu unii dintre acestia fiind implicat astazi in Initiativa Ortodoxa Lausanne.

Lucrea contine contributii ale mai multor autori romani, evanghelici (Emil Bartos, Otniel Bunaciu) si ortodocsi (Ioan Sauca, Vasile Mihoc, Stelian Tofana).

Am selectat mai jos citeva fragmente dintr-un foarte interesant interviu acordat de Teodor Baconschi lui Cristian Patrasconiu pentru platforma LaPunkt. Sper ca ele va vor motiva sa citi intregul interviu, care poate fi accesat la linkul de mai sus.

Avem de-a face, desigur, cu o perspectiva conservatoare si ortodoxa, asumata in mod deschis de autor. Ceea ce nu inseamna insa ca aceasta il scuteste de anumite interpretari partizane si subiective, desigur, inevitabile in orice demers intelectual cinstit.

Enumar, in fuga, citeva dintre acestea:

• perspectiva exclusiv negativa asupra procesului de secularizare in Europa
• invinuirea exclusiva a protestantismului pentru acest ‘flagel’
• cresterea prezentei musulmane in Europa privita preponderent ca o amenintare
• atitudinea implicit critica fata de papa Francisn, pus in contract cu ‘ultimul papă conservator, Benedict al XVI-lea’

si la acestea as putea adauga si altele, dar va las s-o faceti voi insiva.

Societatea românească e un mozaic de fracturi. Aveam, la 1900, un retard istoric de cel puțin 100 de ani față de Occident (evident, e o apreciere pur estimativă). Aproape un secol mai târziu, când a căzut comunismul, eram, iarăși, una dintre cele mai sărace țări de pe continent. Deși ne-au ajutat să ne dezvoltăm, tranziția democratică și integrarea euro-atlantică n-au făcut decât să ne așeze întru-un sistem de referință care ne-a agravat complexele de inferioritate. Pe acest fundal dislocat, regăsirea tradiției precomuniste, cu o Biserică Ortodoxă liberă, s-a făcut adesea formal și zgomotos, fără creșterea organică de care au nevoie procesele istorice firești. Am intrat în mileniul trei cu povara acestor handicapuri. Prin urmare, nu putem încă avea o atitudinea critică față de Occident: nu l-am trăit pe dinăuntru. Dacă ne socotim ca parte integrantă a lui, ne ies oricând la iveală reminiscențele comuniste și orientale. Dacă îl respingem, nu prea avem ce să punem în loc. Avem, cum s-a spus, o modernizare lipsită de modernitate. Am copiat, în loc să asimilăm. Cu alte cuvinte, în loc să spunem ce e greșit amenajat ”la ei”, ne sar în ochi propriile defecțiuni de parcurs.

Community Day on Fr Dumitru Staniloae

Dear Friends,

Our next Community Lecture Day will take place on Saturday 16 April 2016 and will focus on Father Dumitru Staniloae. Revd Dr Danut Manastireanu will be the speaker for the day and he will devote his two lectures to the work of the great Romanian theologian.

Dr. Manastireanu is an Anglican lay theologian and has been until recently Faith in Development Director at World Vision International (Middle East & Eastern Europe Regional Office). He has written his doctorate on ‘A Perichoretic Model of the Church: The Trinitarian Ecclesiology of Dumitru Staniloae’ (now published by Lambert Academic Publishing) and he has been involved for decades in the Protestant-Orthodox dialogue. Dr Manastireanu has also been a long-standing friend and supporter of the Institute and he has been instrumental in helping fund the publication of the THE WAY course, as well as in introducing this course nation-wide in Romania.

As before, the Community Lecture Day will take place at our premises – Palamas House, 25-27 High Street, Chesterton, Cambridge CB4 1NQ.

Lausanne Initiative to bring together Orthodox and Evangelical leaders in Ethiopia

Building on the success of three international consultations in Albania and Finland the Lausanne-Orthodox Initiative (LOI) is now turning its attention to regional consultations, the first due to take place in Ethiopia in October 2016. In a nation traditionally first evangelised by St. Mark and St. Matthew the Orthodox Church has an unbroken history of witness for two millennia whilst the Evangelical Churches have seen one of the highest rates of church growth in recent history.  Together these Churches seek to bear contemporary witness to Jesus Christ in a land which sits at the meeting point of three continents – Africa, Asia and Europe.

The initiative for the planned consultation was birthed when two Ethiopian Orthodox leaders and two Ethiopian Evangelicals met in Finland at the LOI 2015 consultation. Having formed a local planning team they are now working with LOI to invite leaders across their two traditions from within Ethiopia, from neighbouring countries and from as far away as India and the USA to join them in exploring how they can witness together in the context of the challenge of Islam, humanitarian need and challenges within our own churches.

The LOI was established by Lausanne in partnership with Orthodox Church leaders following the 2010 Cape Town Congress. It is led by a Steering Group an international of Evangelical and Orthodox leaders and currently facilitated by Canon Mark Oxbrow of Faith2Share (mark.oxbrow@faith2share.net) to whom enquiries can be sent. ‘Cu adevărat acesta este preot’ – Marturie despre Pr. Dumitru Zamisnicu

Astazi, 15 martie 2016, se implinesc 42 de ani de la inaltarea in slava a Parintelui Dumitru Zamisnicu, pe care am avut marea cinste de a-l cunoaste, la inceputul anilor ’70, pe cind Securitatea incerca sa-l inchida intr-un azil psihiatric, acuzindu-l de ‘delir mistic’.

Redau mai jos inceputul marturiei despre Pr. Zamisnicu, scrisa de un autor necunoscut.

Aveam la Fedeleşeni, în comuna Brătuleşti, judeţul laşi, o soră după trup. Venea pe la noi şi ne tot vorbea de preotul lor de-acolo, Zamisnicu. Eu o auzeam dar nu prea o luam în seamă, ştiind că sora mea cam iubeşte şi laudă popii. Ba chiar îi mai ziceam:

– Lasă că ştiu eu că tu îi lauzi… Îi tot un popă şi, în fond, asta li-i şcoala: să intre în inima poporului.

S-a făcut mai apoi că am avut nevoie de a mă duce la Tg. Frumos. Întorcându-mă spre casă, sub deal la baltă am ajuns din urmă nişte oameni din Hândreşti. Unul din ei se dă în tovărăşie de drum cu mine.

Printre altele, omul îmi spune că la Brătuleşti a venit un preot care se întrece cu şaga, îi prea din cale-afară. Însă ceea ce face el îi la rău timp, şi lucrează cam cum exagerată îndrăzneală. Ce am mai vorbit apoi nu interesează să spun, însă mi-am pus în minte să mă duc la acest preot spre a-l examina eu însumi. Am tot întârziat până aproape de postul Sf. Apostoli Petru şi Pavel, când alţii au luat-o înaintea mea şi au adus vestea că n-au mai văzut preot ca el. “Cu adevărat acesta este preot”, spuneau. În ziua de 29 iunie 1957, ne-am pregătit mai mulţi şi ne-am dus la el.

Slujba se ţinea la Fedeleşeni. Ajunşi la biserică nu am avut timp nici a-i săruta mâna, că el ne-a cuprins grabnic pe toţi şi ne-a sărutat. Încă nu începuse slujba şi eu i-am cerut să mă mărturisească, fiindcă nu mă mărturisisem în postul acela. Mă aşteptam de la părintele la o laudă, la o felicitare, că postul fusese lung şi eu m-am ferit cu patul iar în ce priveşte masa nu mâncasem deloc carne, din celelalte mai înfruntându-mă. Dar n-a fost de fel aşa! Am să redau, atât cât se poate spune, modul în care a decurs mărturisirea. Aşadar, mă ia părintele în primire:
