4.2 Freedom Without Responsibility?
People who are spiritually and socially immature imagine that freedom means that they have all the rights in the world and no responsibilities whatsoever. However, this is childish and ridiculous. Nevertheless, many people in post-communist societies, particularly younger people, think like this.
Where such attitudes prevail, there is no hope that we can build solid democracies in our countries, because this demands hard work and true discipline.
Yet there is a source of hope: when former communist countries opened their borders and people were able to travel and sometimes also work in the west, they very quickly came to understand that one cannot be truly free without paying the price of responsible living.
