One cannot stop not being atracted to the social gospel in theory at least.
But,to accept Raineer’s description of today’s religious world as one split in pyramidal oriented on one hand and relationship oriented on the other you have to accept an over-simplification of the reality. I understand he is presenting it this way for the sake of getting fast to the solutions he is proposing.
What I cannot grasp any way I try is how can we ever define what an equitable society should look like without heading inevitably towards utopic solutions such as comunal living or, worse, comunism?
I believe that if we could “find” the matrix we can start pouring the material (rich and poor people alike) into it.
Can we reconcile different historical era without having to use non-religious instruments?
Can we say that slavery was OK 2000 years ago but it is not OK now based solely on christian teachings?
A few thoughts.
