6.2 Marketplace Christians vs. Closet Christians
Jesus tells us not to ‘hide our light under a bushel’ (Matt. 5:15). By this he means that we are not to isolate ourselves from society, because it is when we live our life of faith among people that we give them an opportunity to see how the gospel is transforming our lives (if indeed this is happening). If we isolate ourselves because we care more about safeguarding our alleged holiness than about being vibrant witnesses of God in a world heading towards destruction, those people who have lived around us and yet have never had the opportunity to hear (or see) the gospel may testify against us at the Last Judgement. Someone once said: ‘The waters that you keep for yourself will go sour’ and ‘The light that you keep for yourself will make you blind’.
This is why we have to be ‘marketplace Christians’ who view their entire life – their job, their cleaning the house or making love to their wives – as a form of worship and a testimony to the gospel of Jesus Christ. As the apostle Paul says, ‘Whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything to the glory of God’ (1 Cor. 10:31).
