40 Years in the Desert – 3. The Pathology of Transition 5

3.5 The Lack of Models

One of the most critical situations in the post-communist period is the inability of the older generations to offer a model to the younger generation. Because of their compromises or simply because of their tacit acceptance of the former oppressive regime, most of the people in the older generations lack the moral authority to become spiritual guides for the new generations.

Yet paradoxically, in spite of their limitations and of the baggage they carry from the former regime, the older generations have no other choice than to engage in the effort of shaping the future of their churches and of their country. Nobody else can do this for them. This is why, in humility and through the grace of God, they can succeed against all the odds.
