From Bondage to the Desert – 1.4 State and Church under Communism – 5

1.4.5 Did the Church Play a Role in the Fall of Communism?

Western Christian media and also some secular media have promoted the idea that the Church played a major and active role in the bringing down of the communist regimes of Eastern Europe. This ‘generous’ theory has made communists more suspicious of Christianity, now perceived as a serious threat, and has led to even more persecution for churches still living under communist regimes.

It is our conviction, however, that this idea is simply a myth. It is an undeniable fact that the church did not play any role in the fall of communism in Russia, Bulgaria, Albania or Hungary. Furthermore, it played only a minor role in the anti-communist upheavals in Romania and Czechoslovakia. It was only in Poland and East Germany that the church played any significant role in the fall of communist regimes, and these were the exceptions rather than the norm.
