Going to Rome?

Rowan Williams & Pope Benedict XVI

The recent somewhat surprising move of Rome encouraging disgruntled Anglicans to join the Catholic Church continues to be discussed especially in Anglican circles.

I recommend to you a recent text on this topic on the Godschool’s Blog.  Here it is:

What a hoo-hah about the Pope’s offer of a home for disaffected Anglicans!  What’s it all about?

I don’t pretend to understand it all, but it seems to go like this:

the Anglican General Synod decided in the 1990s that women could be ordained as priests.  Various people were unhappy about this, but it was decided by the necessary majority and so was implemented, and as time has gone on and people have got used to the idea, it is much more accepted in practice than it was – although not by all, and women priests still tell stories of those who refuse to receive Holy Communion from them.

It is a logical step from women being priested to their being made bishops.  The big psychological and theological barrier was broken at their priesting:  if you went along with it then,  you are likely to see no real reason now why they can’t become bishops.  In for a penny, in for a pound.

  1. hopefuly not !

    • hopefully not what?

      • Chiar nu era evident? :)

  2. u might try 2nd and 3rd rome for a change :-)
